View Full Version : Looking for opinions on a new car
As most of you know, I recently was in an accident this past week with the MS3. The insurance company has declared it a total loss, so I'm going to be in the market for something soon. I'm open to all suggestions. New, Used, whatever. Just looking to get some feedback.
Unfortunately, I can't go with like a 03-04 Cobra, or LSx series Camaro, GTO etc. because of the space. With two kids, I need at least 4 doors. Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks! :monkeydance::turtle:

Evo9 or 06 model Sti
G8 GXP???
Any specific reason fro the Evo9 or 06 STI? Were the early year models better?
I've looked for GXP's and can't seem to find any. Those are sick cars!
I'm just so undecided.

the evo 9s only came out in 06 , they have Mivec and also the stock turbo has a bigger hotside than the evo8 ( 03-05) . Plus the 05 has the mr package and the 06 evo9 does as well

srt8 300c(lighter than the chargers) with just a tune and boltons they hit low-mid 12's
Ponitac G8 with tune and boltons they can also hit low-mid 12's
Jeep srt8 AWD- with just tune 12.6

I would say evo before sti. Stronger drivetrain on the evo. Yoc can get further without beefing up anything (besides the clutch) on the evo than the sti, look at my evo...I would guess around 450whp right now and then the race car before we took it down was at 558 daily...stock block, tranny, tcase, axles, etc...clutch and cams, thats all it takes. Any evo8 or 9 would be good, so thats 03-06. Good news is we are evo pros over here :)
If you want to stay stock turbo and make a nice bit of power, evo 9. Or a stock framed turbo like a FPgreen or FPred, evo9 usually makes a bit more power with the MIVEC. However if you want big turbo (35r, etc) any evo 8 or 9 will be fine. Granted the evo9 will only make about 20-30 more than an 8 with the stockish turbos, once you go bigger, MIVEC doesnt matter much.

the only downside on the evo9 Mr is the weak 6speed tranny . Most people swap out the 6 speed tranny for a 5speed one . I already had to fix my tranny because the synchros went out on 5th and 6th gear

The GXPs are clean! and LS3s! so they're fairly quick!
I personally like the 06 STI look better than the wagon..but to each their own. :hi5:

What do people have against the Evo10? I'm not educated enough about the models to know what the differences are besides the visual differences.

I'm at work so I can't see the ebay link, but the Jeep SRT-8's are sick! I remember racing one what I had my GTO (bolt ons and tune) and it stomped me pretty good from a dig. (AWD and he had a 75 shot, but still) From a roll he put about a car on me. I love the way they look too.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm strongly considering an Evo. I've heard nothing but good things about them, I've just always liked the looks of the STi better. Know of anyone selling one? :) Pros and Cons of Evo9 or 10?

Very nice cars. I've tried looking for some, but I haven't had any luck. No dealers have any left so I would have to go used, which I don't mind, but I might not be looking hard enough.

G* GXP gets my vote hands down
i dont know how bad u are in need of a new car but i know u can order it. u cant constumise ur own too. or just keep looking for one, im pretty sure there is one out there just gata look lil bit harder
I didn't think they were taking anymore orders. I'll have to look into it. I'm not in a real hurry to buy, I have to wait until the insurance gets settled and I'm driving my mom's car while she is out of the country, so no biggie. Speaking of it

06 or earlier sti or a evo. MDR makes goot point on sti tranny but all wheel drive, turbo, and a family sized car sounds like a win win to me:thumbsup:
I personally would look for a 2007 Volvo S60R. 2.5L Turbo 5cyl 6 speed manual. Mmmmm.
Well, this will be a daily drive also for now. Not so sure I want a project car. I don't have enough time for something like that. The Camaro has been down for like a month now. Real simple fix, I just haven't had the time. Looking for a quick, reliable, daily driver. Something that responds well to mods, but can handle the extra power and pick up the kids and groceries occaisionally :)

srt8 jeep and you can tow(not much but you can)
Evo 9 has bigger hotside and cold side that evo 8. The 03-04 have a 9.8 hotside, the 05 was the first year with ACD (active center differential) and the 10.5 hotside which is good for about 25whp gain over the 9.8. We call the 05 the evo8.5 because it was a mix between an 8 and a 9. The 9 has the 10.5 hotside with a bigger coldside as well, also good for a few more ponies. It also have MIVEC which allows adjustable timing on the intake cam via the tune. Our nasty mivec map picks up 20 whp on a stock evo9 not touching anything else.
Really, the ACD is good in the fact that it has a LSD in the front, however bad for over 550whp, it tends to break down. The 03-04 non-RS (RS is the BASE model, no power anything and no AC unless ordered with it) dont have an LSD so at high HP (like our street car) the front tends to light up on launches lol. The 04 RS comes with the mitsu LSd up front but no ACD, that is said to be one of the best "power-house" evos. Like Rolo said if yo uget a evo9, get a GSR not a MR. The GSR has the stronger 5 speed tranny.
The evo10s are growing. Theur stock block record is growing closer to the 4g63 records. The 10 has a 4b11 motor btw, its aluminium block instead of cst iron. Again if you get a 10, get the GSR with the 5 speed, MRs have the 6 speed DSG setup that sucks and breaks. We have made some impressive power with the 10s so far. They are fast, handle better due to their increased rigidity, and are more comfortable. They are also heavier, but only like 400 lbs lol ;), thats it hahah. None the less if yo ucan afford it a very good investent, comfortable, fast and reacts VERY well to mods.
As far as the STi VS Evo goes. IMO the comfort is about the same and the evo has a better interior year model vs year model. My 03 interior isnt bad at all, I like it. I used to have a mazda3 ;). Feel free to call me with any questions, im always game to help people get into a badass platform.
I was about to get an STi before the evo I bought. Then this deal on mine came into play and I couldnt pass it up. From seeing mikes car, which is now our race car, at 558 being daily driven at that power, I knew I had made the right choice lol.
Ive been in the mazda community, my mazda3 had a custom GT28r setup that from a 30 roll pulled full bolt on speeds ;). My friend who we just got into an evo came from a fully build mazda3 (tranny and motor) putting down some good numbers and to this day has no regrets with the evo. He has made more power cheaper and easier with out all the supporting mods/build as the mazda of course. My buddy jordan from victoria just traded his mazdaspeed3 in on an 03 like mine as well a few weeks ago.

Thanks Mario, I've actually been doing a lot of research on the Cobalt SS sedan. Seems like they have a good bit a potential. The flat foot shifting and launch control are a plus also. Same horsepower rating as my MS3 but gets a lot better gas mileagae and cheaper also. Thanks again

Yeah, but that one is from the shaft  jk :)
Still can't see spending that kind of money on a Cobalt. I paid about that much for my MS3, but it came with HIDS and everything and the interior was a lot more refined. The interior of the Cobalt still looks like a Cobalt. Even the exterior isn't much different, but I am impressed with the new motor.
decisions decisions...
It's also the same body style that they have had on the Cobalt since the Cobalt came out in 2003. Pretty outdated and I'm sure they plan on changing this soon with all the changes to the rest of their line.

Get a hennesy gt1000 f the bull shit lol seen one the other day umm I jizzed
yeah. ya work on srt's too?
Yepps
Imo, skip the moderate cars, get something with potential. Even with the cobalts, your only battling yourself with wheel spin, not the guy next to you lol. Granted, they are fast from 60 rolls, sometimes ;)
Go look at my street car thread. See how LITTLE the mod list is lol. I can tell you I didnt really need some of the parts I had, but the amount you had dropped into the speed would have made a pretty sick evo. We have an 05 that we call our trophy car, its an 05 evo8 on stock turbo. Basically 85% bolted. We call it the trophy car becuase it really shows what our tuning can do...last weekend the computer said 422 on a dynojet ;) and 391ish on a mustang. if you know your evos, thats sick for a stock turbo 8. Not to mention with the spool of the stock turbo, it goes from 95ish ft/lbs to over 300 in less than 1,000 rpm...its a kick in the ass when you ride in it lol
Thanks again MDR. Your insight has really been helpful. You're quickly convincing me to lean towards the Evo.

Well, judging by whats on here...its either evo or g8 lol.
From mike just now: evo, terminator, or vette.
And from that only 4 door is evo lol
If the wife would let me get a terminator, I would have probably already bought one, but you're right. Evo is probably the closest I'm going to get performance wise that has 4 doors. I was already almost maxed out on the MS3 and other direct injection platforms I'm sure are going to have similar problems.
